Vincent van Gogh -Skull with a Burning Cigarette, 1885-86. Oil on canvas
This is one of van Gogh’s earlier works, and it’s a great example of how much his style changed over an incredibly short period of time. note the long, purposeful brushstrokes, relatively smooth transitions, and muted color palette. look at the background - pitch black. only three years later came a series of portraits van Gogh did of the Roulin family. Consider Portrait of Joseph Roulin, (1889).
what a stark change! look at the vibrant colors used, coupled with the unique brushstrokes that would come to define the impressionist and post impressionist movements. and look at the background!!! god how did he mature so much as an artist in just three years. shit like this is why i love van gogh
